Mel Horwitch
Professor of Management
Chair, Department of Technology Management;
Director, Institute for Technology and Enterprise

Mel Horwitch is Professor of the Management and Chair of the Department of Technology Management at Polytechnic Institute of NYU and founding Director of the Institute for Technology and Enterprise. He is also Visiting Professor at London Business School. Previously he was Professor and Founding Dean of Management at Theseus Institute in Sophia Antipolis, France, serving on the Theseus Board of Directors and Theseus Scientific Advisory Board.

Professor Horwitch has also served on the Faculties of the Sloan School at MIT and Harvard Business School. He was also the John M. Olin Distinguished Fellow at Templeton College, Oxford University and Visiting Professor at the University of Paris-Dauphine. Professor Horwitch was also on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Macro-Engineering S ocieties and Vice President and Board member of the American Society for Macro-Engineering. He is also a member of the Committee on Industrial Economics of the National Research Council.

He received his AB from Princeton University and MBA and Doctorate from Harvard Business School, and was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand.

Professor Horwitch has written extensively on innovation and technology strategy, particularly with reference to such knowledge-intensive sectors as services, information technology, and telecommunications. His publications include Technology in the Modern Corporation: A Strategic Perspective (editor and contributor), Clipped Wings: The American SST Conflict, Energy Future: Report of the Energy Project at the Harvard Business School (contributor), articles published in such journals as Management Science, Policy Science, Sloan Management Review, Technology in Society, and Business Strategy International, and several paper cases and Web-based multimedia cases. His current scholarly interest focuses on digital- based and content innovation.

Nina Ziv
Academic Director
Institute for Technology and Enterprise
Industry Associate Professor of Management
Co-Director Executive Master's Management Degree Programs

Nina Ziv is Academic Director of the Institute for Technology and Enterprise where she is leading the Institute's strategic initiative on media. She is currently conducting a major research study on the transformation of the book publishing industry and on the development of media conglomerates and the issues surrounding the potential convergence/synergies of different businesses within these conglomerates. Dr. Ziv's other research interest is in the area of global entrepreneurship where she is especially focusing on the role small companies play in the development of an industry. Dr Ziv is an Industry Associate Professor in Polytechnic Institute of NYU's Department of Technology Management and also is Co-Director of the Executive Master's Management Degree Programs at Polytechnic. Before joining Polytechnic Institute of NYU, she spent 15 years in the technology industry. She was a Vice President of Technology Strategy and Planning at Merrill Lynch in New York City where she spearheaded many innovative leading-edge technology projects including the development of Merrill's corporate intranet. Dr. Ziv received her PhD from New York University in Applied Linguistics.

Dr. Ziv has been a Guest Lecturer at the London Business School's Executive Program held at Harvard University. She has been an invited speaker at the MIT Research Forum in Tel Aviv, Israel, at Forrester's Research Forum on the Financial Services Industry, and at various academic conferences in Taiwan, Israel, Hawaii and Greece. She has designed and chaired several Institute events including a Round Table on the evolution of the publishing industry held in New York City and Round Tables held in Rehovot, Israel on the managerial challenges facing the emerging biotechnology industry in Israel and the role of the professional manager in an entrepreneurial environment. She co-chaired a unique Round Table and developed curriculum materials on the challenges facing managers in the post-September 11 environment http://www.ite.poly.edu/htmls/press021202.htm.

Dr. Ziv's research on the print media industry and on entrepreneurship has been published by the European Case Clearing House, and the Institute for Technology and Enterprise.

Her case study on The Chicago Tribune Interactive http://www.ite.poly.edu/htmls/tribune_final_013001.pdf will be published in two forthcoming case books on strategic management and has also been translated into other languages for use by business schools around the world.
